Ive got a confession to make. Sometimes, I drive too fast and I speed. Ive done it before and Ill probably do it again. And guess what? Ive gotten speeding tickets. If you think that Im a bad actor and as far as driving too fast is concerned, youd be correct (though this isnt a normal occurrence for me. Really!).
However, I havent had to actually pay a speeding ticket recently due to the fact that (at least in the state of Texas), citizens can often take defensive driving instead of paying the fine (and the resulting insurance rate increase). This is often left up to the judges discretion as to who is granted permission to take defensive driving and some states have requirements that you cannot take defensive driving more than once during a certain time period (say 1 year or 6 months).
However, Ive noticed that the different types of defensive driving school courses vary wildly in cost and type. If youre ticketed for speeding, by all means check your local laws to see if defensive driving is even offered in your state. But, if you think defensive driving might be an option for you to pursue, use this quick checklist to make sure you are researching all of your potential options.
1)Look at online options. Did you know that in some states, you dont even have to go to a physical classroom. You can take your defensive driving course entirely online. Do you really want to spend your time driving back and forth to some random training facility for 8 hours a day trying to pass a quiz and get relieved from your ticket? I sure dont.
Ive taken defensive driving courses online and they are really great. Usually there is a quiz at the end of a section and many of the educational scenes are displayed in graphics. Its almost like watching a cartoon. The cartoon might not be the funniest thing youve ever watched, but its certainly nice to watch the entire course from the comfort of your home.
2)Go for the comedy option. If you cant do it online, you might as well have a little comedic interlude in your driving school. Several cities comedy clubs augment their incomes (I think) by having defensive driving school at their clubs when their regular business isnt in full session. Reports of the comedy option range from the sublime to the awful (much like comedians themselves), but if you can get a good recommendation of a place in your city, try it out. You might find it to be a delightfully funny experience.
3)Locations are fine and dandy, but if you dont learn anything, you’ll quickly find yourself being ticketed again. In fact, parts 1 and 2 are almost unimportant as compared to the meat of the defensive driving experience. Learn the important parts. It can save lives. And once you know all about driving correctly youll save yourself a lot of time and money in the future.

At some point in our driving years I suspect most all of us have to take defensive driving, whether to get rid of a ticket or maybe to just lower our insurance. For many years you only had one option, traffic school. But times and the options have changed.
Traffic school used to consist of getting up early on a Saturday morning or spending two nights during the week sitting in a classroom, listening to a instructor speak in a monotone voice and watching old 16mm films with 1950s cars and actors explaining the right and wrong way to drive a car. Although that option is probably available if you look for it, these days defensive driving class has gone high tech.
So what are the choices? * - Traffic school with a twist: Some of the options you can choose from if youre looking for an in-class experience is humorous traffic school, traffic school with a meal, juggling and magic defensive driving classes. * - Online defensive driving: Yes the power of the Internet has fueled the growth of online defensive driving. Taking the course online can have its drawbacks, especially if you dont have broadband access. * - DVD or VHS defensive driving: You can rent these at your local video store and now at least one school, is offering customers the ability to order the course online, have it delivered to their door and then keep the dvd or vhs. Thats right, no returns so of course that means no late fees.
So whats right for you? Well, this article cant answer that question but you can. You need to consider your schedule, how quickly your court date is coming, how important taking a class alone or with people is to you and maybe even what it takes to keep your head into it.
With these additional choices, taking defensive driving class should no longer be as big of an inconvenience since with two of the choices you can take them around your schedule and even in your underwear if you want.
